How does an apple sorter work?

How an apple sorter works

Introduction

Sorting apples is one of the key stages in preparing fruit for sale. Modern orchards increasingly use automatic sorting lines that allow fast and precise classification of fruit by size, quality, and color.

Thanks to modern sorting systems, it is possible to process large quantities of fruit while maintaining high final product quality. An example of such a solution is fruit sorting machines, which can be seen at

Apple sorting process

A modern sorter operates in several stages.

Bin unloading

Apples enter the sorting line from bins. The fruit is transported gently to minimize mechanical damage.

Fruit separation

At the beginning of the process, apples are separated so that each fruit is analyzed individually.

Size measurement

Measurement systems determine the diameter of each apple and assign it to the appropriate size class.

Quality assessment

In more advanced lines, camera systems are used to evaluate:

  • apple color
  • shape
  • skin damage.

Directing fruit to appropriate outputs

At the end of the process, apples are directed to different sorting channels, from where they can be sent for packing or further processing.

Advantages of automatic apple sorting

Modern fruit sorting facilities offer many benefits:

  • significantly higher work efficiency
  • consistent sorting quality
  • reduced manual labor costs
  • better preparation of fruit for sale.
